Begin with the online permit gateway listed in the application guide. If the portal does not recognize the address or project type, contact 434-352-8183.

How long might review take?

A typical review timeline was not verified. Ask the agency for its current completeness and review estimate.

An emailed request is not scheduled unless the applicant receives a confirmation. Required stages commonly include footing, foundation/anchor or setup, slab, coordinated framing and trade rough-ins, insulation, meter base, and final; additional inspections may apply. Work must be inspected before concealment. The current fee schedule charges $25 for reinspection.

Which codes and exemptions should I review?

Appomattox County Building Inspections enforces Virginia's statewide building and fire-prevention codes. Although the county webpage still displays an obsolete 2015-code notice, the mandatory 2021 Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code cycle governs in 2026: the 2021 Virginia Construction Code based principally on the 2021 International Building Code with Virginia amendments, the 2021 Virginia Residential and Existing Building Codes, applicable 2021 plumbing, mechanical, fuel-gas, energy-conservation, swimming-pool and spa, and fire-code provisions, and the referenced 2020 National Electrical Code with Virginia amendments. Qualifying one-story detached accessory structures not exceeding 256 square feet are exempt from the building permit, although the County requires a zoning application for placement. Other Virginia USBC exemptions include fences not serving as required safety or swimming-pool barriers; qualifying tents of 900 square feet or less with an occupant load of 50 or fewer; certain low-voltage wiring; limited roof-decking replacement on specified residential occupancies; and minor ordinary repairs such as painting, wall covering, cabinetry, and floor covering. A farm-use structure still requires construction and zoning applications, but the County charges no fee and performs no building inspections when the agricultural exemption applies.

Before contacting the permit counter

Have the project facts ready.

A productive call starts with a clear description of the property and proposed work. Keep the site address, parcel or assessor number, project valuation, existing occupancy, approximate square footage, structural scope, contractor information, and desired start date in front of you. Those facts help the Authority Having Jurisdiction route the question to building, planning, fire, environmental health, or another reviewing discipline.

Questions worth asking

  • • Is the parcel inside an incorporated city or county service area?
  • • Does this scope require building, trade, zoning, fire, or site permits?
  • • What plans and supporting documents make the submittal complete?
  • • How much lead time is needed for each inspection?
