What you’ll find here

3,147 local profiles covering the counties and county equivalents of the 50 states and D.C. Each lists the permitting authority we found, its contact details, and the official links it publishes: application portals and forms, fee schedules, code information and inspection instructions.

Some counties handle permits directly. Others refer applicants to a city, town or state agency. Each profile is a starting point for checking who handles your address and project. The permit guides cover common projects such as decks, fences and roofs.

How the data is compiled

Profiles are compiled from official agency websites and documents and link back to them. Where an agency doesn’t publish something, the profile says so rather than guessing. The current dataset was last updated on October 1, 2026.
