Which codes and exemptions should I review?

Effective January 1, 2025: 2024 International Residential Code for non-agricultural one- and two-family dwellings and applicable accessory structures; 2024 International Building Code, 2024 International Fire Code, 2024 International Mechanical Code, and 2024 International Fuel Gas Code for non-agricultural commercial, industrial, storage, institutional-public, and multifamily structures; and 2023 National Electrical Code. Illinois Plumbing Code and county amendments also apply. Bona fide agricultural buildings, accessory structures, and structures on qualifying farms are excluded from the Article 5 building-code provisions and related building-code fees, but still require a $25 agricultural-exempt permit application and must comply with zoning, floodplain, septic, subdivision, and other applicable requirements. Agricultural fences are exempt from zoning fees; ordinary non-agricultural construction generally requires a permit.
