How are inspections scheduled?

Contact the County Zoning Office at 715-537-6375 for land-use or sanitary inspection arrangements; the Zoning Administrator conducts compliance inspections with reasonable notice and consent or an inspection warrant, except in emergencies. Before any excavation or construction, also contact the UDC inspector assigned to the township on the county's revised February 24, 2026 inspector list. Listed inspector numbers include Tall Pine Building Inspections at 715-458-0741, Independent Inspections at 715-354-3963, William Koepp at 715-790-3688, Justin Steinmeyer Inspections at 715-556-0066, REM Inspecting at 715-598-4484, West WI Inspections at 715-556-3136, and Joe Atwood at 715-764-2948; commercial inquiries go to Wisconsin DSPS at 608-266-2112.

Which codes and exemptions should I review?

Barron County Chapter 17 Land Use Ordinance, including zoning, shoreland, shoreland-wetland, floodplain, land-division, and private-sewage provisions, governs land-use permits in participating unincorporated areas. County permits are required before construction, moving, or structural alteration of homes, garages, sheds, decks, fences, stairways, boathouse storage structures, signs, and antennas, and a sanitary permit must precede a dwelling land-use permit. Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code SPS 320-325 permits and inspections are separately administered by each township's contracted UDC inspector; commercial building review and inspection are referred to Wisconsin DSPS where no certified municipal program applies. Ordinary upkeep and maintenance are exempt from the county land-use permit. In agricultural zoning districts, permits are limited to human-habitation structures; animal-habitation structures over 600 square feet; manure-waste storage systems; structures within 75 feet of a road or street right-of-way; structures used for an approved special-exception use; substantial changes of use; and installation of a bathroom connected to POWTS in an accessory structure. Other municipal or UDC permits can still apply.

Before contacting the permit counter

Have the project facts ready.

A productive call starts with a clear description of the property and proposed work. Keep the site address, parcel or assessor number, project valuation, existing occupancy, approximate square footage, structural scope, contractor information, and desired start date in front of you. Those facts help the Authority Having Jurisdiction route the question to building, planning, fire, environmental health, or another reviewing discipline.

Questions worth asking

  • • Is the parcel inside an incorporated city or county service area?
  • • Does this scope require building, trade, zoning, fire, or site permits?
  • • What plans and supporting documents make the submittal complete?
  • • How much lead time is needed for each inspection?
