Project questions

Frequently asked questions for La Crosse County

Who handles permitting for this jurisdiction?

La Crosse County Zoning, Planning and Land Information Department is the identified county-level authority for this profile. Confirm that the property is in its service area before filing.

How should I begin an application?

Begin with the online permit gateway listed in the application guide. If the portal does not recognize the address or project type, contact 608-785-9722.

How long might review take?

Zoning/occupancy applications are typically processed in 1-2 weeks and cannot be issued until all other applicable permits are in place.

How are inspections scheduled?

After obtaining the county zoning/occupancy permit, contact the applicable township or its building inspector to obtain the local building permit and schedule construction inspections. For county zoning questions call 608-785-9722. Onsite wastewater and well inspections are handled by County Environmental Health at 608-785-9771.

Which codes and exemptions should I review?

La Crosse County Code Chapter 17 zoning, county shoreland and floodplain ordinances, and county sign, public-works, and telecommunications ordinances. General county zoning applies in all unincorporated towns except Campbell and Burns; shoreland and floodplain ordinances apply throughout unincorporated areas. Townships separately administer building/excavation permits and Wisconsin building-code/UDC inspections. A county zoning/occupancy permit is not required for an accessory building of 100 square feet or less when it is outside the floodplain and shoreland districts, though setbacks and performance standards still apply. Certified agricultural buildings constructed on a farm are also exempt. Remodeling that does not structurally alter the building's three-dimensional footprint does not require a county zoning permit.

Before contacting the permit counter

Have the project facts ready.

A productive call starts with a clear description of the property and proposed work. Keep the site address, parcel or assessor number, project valuation, existing occupancy, approximate square footage, structural scope, contractor information, and desired start date in front of you. Those facts help the Authority Having Jurisdiction route the question to building, planning, fire, environmental health, or another reviewing discipline.

  • • Does this scope require building, trade, zoning, fire, or site permits?
  • • What plans and supporting documents make the submittal complete?
