Start with the issuing authority’s own submission lane. A complete application package, accurate valuation, and accessible inspection path are the fastest route through statutory plan review.

Recommended first click

Open the SmartGov public portal.

Use the official digital gateway to submit plans, monitor review comments, pay required charges, and request inspections when the permit is issued. If the link is unavailable, use the agency website or phone number on the administrative profile to confirm the current lane.

Typical review lane

N/A for general building permits; the County states review and processing time depends on the project. Correctly submitted mechanical, plumbing, reroof and demolition trade permits are typically issued within 48 hours.

Treat this as a planning signal, not a guaranteed approval date. Completeness, corrections, resubmittals, and agency workload control the actual clock.

01

Confirm jurisdiction

Verify the parcel is inside this agency’s service area and note whether a city, state, fire marshal, septic authority, or utility district also has approval authority.

02

Assemble a complete package

Prepare legible plans, site information, project valuation, ownership authorization, contractor information, and any energy, floodplain, zoning, or utility documentation the issuing office requires.

03

Track the review record

Keep the permit number, approved plan set, correction comments, fee receipts, and inspection results together. Those records establish the compliance trail for the next trade.

Project questions

Frequently asked questions for Teton County

Who handles permitting for this jurisdiction?

Teton County Planning and Building Services Department, Building Division is the identified county-level authority for this profile. Confirm that the property is in its service area before filing.

How should I begin an application?

How long might review take?

N/A for general building permits; the County states review and processing time depends on the project. Correctly submitted mechanical, plumbing, reroof and demolition trade permits are typically issued within 48 hours.

How are inspections scheduled?

The permit holder or agent must request inspections. Register and sign in to the SmartGov portal, open My Portal and My Inspections, or leave a message on the inspection line at 307-732-5745. Contact the Permit Technician at 307-733-7030 if the permit is not linked or an inspection is unavailable; do not request same-day inspections online. Fire Department electrical, sprinkler and other fire inspections must be scheduled directly with Jackson Hole Fire/EMS. An inspection must occur at least once every 180 days to keep the permit active.

Which codes and exemptions should I review?

2024 International Building Code, 2024 International Residential Code, 2024 International Plumbing Code, 2024 International Mechanical Code, 2024 International Fuel Gas Code, 2021 International Energy Conservation Code, 2024 International Existing Building Code, limited 2024 International Property Maintenance Code provisions, and the 2023 National Electrical Code, all with County amendments. Jackson Hole Fire/EMS separately enforces the County's 2024 International Fire Code and 2024 International Wildland-Urban Interface Code. County amendments exempt one one-story detached accessory structure per parcel when its floor area does not exceed 200 square feet; one qualifying private-use agricultural building per parcel on more than two acres when roof area is at most 600 square feet and eave height at most 10 feet; qualifying utility-free hoop houses up to 3,500 square feet and 16 feet high; swings and playground equipment; nonstructural sidewalks and slabs; decks or patios no more than 30 inches above grade with no permanent construction above; agricultural fences and fences under six feet; and nonstructural landscaping. Exempt work must still meet setbacks and Land Development Regulations, and separate electrical, plumbing, mechanical, septic or planning permits may apply.

What makes an application complete

A portal submission is only as strong as its supporting record.

Before you click submit, make sure the drawings agree with the site plan, project description, valuation, ownership authorization, and contractor information. If the work changes structure, occupancy, drainage, fire protection, energy performance, or utility demand, describe that scope plainly. Ambiguous narratives create correction cycles and delay the field schedule.

Save the confirmation number, payment receipt, uploaded plan set, and every correction comment. Those records are the backbone of a defensible compliance file when multiple trades or agencies share responsibility.
