Typical review lane

Ask the agency for its current review estimate

Treat this as a planning signal, not a guaranteed approval date. Completeness, corrections, resubmittals, and agency workload control the actual clock.

01

Confirm jurisdiction

Verify the parcel is inside this agency’s service area and note whether a city, state, fire marshal, septic authority, or utility district also has approval authority.

02

Assemble a complete package

Prepare legible plans, site information, project valuation, ownership authorization, contractor information, and any energy, floodplain, zoning, or utility documentation the issuing office requires.

03

Track the review record

Keep the permit number, approved plan set, correction comments, fee receipts, and inspection results together. Those records establish the compliance trail for the next trade.

Project questions

Frequently asked questions for Burnett County

Who handles permitting for this jurisdiction?

Burnett County Land Services Department, Zoning Division is the identified county-level authority for this profile. Confirm that the property is in its service area before filing.

How should I begin an application?

Begin with the online permit gateway listed in the application guide. If the portal does not recognize the address or project type, contact 715-349-2109; UDC inspectors: Atlas Inspections 715-648-5444 or 715-554-2305, REM Inspecting LLC 715-598-4484.

How long might review take?

A typical review timeline was not verified. Ask the agency for its current completeness and review estimate.

How are inspections scheduled?

Submit the land-use application, required dimensioned plot plan, and construction plans for habitable structures to Land Services. County staff performs a site visit and regularly inspects permitted work; call 715-349-2109 to arrange land-use or POWTS inspections. Before any dwelling, bunkhouse, or qualifying addition, contact the township's inspector: Atlas Inspections at 715-648-5444 or 715-554-2305 for Daniels, Dewey, Lincoln, Meenon, Oakland, Roosevelt, Rusk, Scott, Siren, Trade Lake, Sand Lake, and Wood River; REM Inspecting at 715-598-4484 for Anderson, Blaine, Grantsburg, Jackson, La Follette, Swiss, Union, Webb Lake, and West Marshland.

Which codes and exemptions should I review?

Burnett County Chapter 30 Land Use Ordinance, shoreland protection and wetland requirements, Chapter 22 floodplain provisions, sanitary/POWTS requirements, subdivision rules, and current county text amendments including 2026 amendments published by the Zoning Division. The county issues land-use and sanitary permits and inspects permitted land-use work and sewer installations. New dwellings, bunkhouses, and certain additions also require a separate Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code permit under SPS 320-325 from the township's designated Atlas Inspections or REM Inspecting inspector; commercial building-code approval remains under the applicable municipality or Wisconsin DSPS. A county land-use permit is not required for a 100-percent agricultural farm building or farm structure in an agricultural district if it is not intended for human habitation and meets all dimensional, setback, floodplain, and other requirements. Dog houses, tool sheds, playhouses, and similar accessory buildings no larger than 100 square feet are also exempt if every federal, state, county, setback, and dimensional rule is met. These exceptions do not waive sanitary, shoreland, floodplain, wetland, driveway, state UDC, trade, or municipal approvals.

What makes an application complete

A portal submission is only as strong as its supporting record.

Before you click submit, make sure the drawings agree with the site plan, project description, valuation, ownership authorization, and contractor information. If the work changes structure, occupancy, drainage, fire protection, energy performance, or utility demand, describe that scope plainly. Ambiguous narratives create correction cycles and delay the field schedule.

Save the confirmation number, payment receipt, uploaded plan set, and every correction comment. Those records are the backbone of a defensible compliance file when multiple trades or agencies share responsibility.
