Digital permit application gateway

Apply for a permit in Sonoma County

Start with the issuing authority’s own submission lane. A complete application package, accurate valuation, and accessible inspection path are the fastest route through statutory plan review.

Recommended first click

Open the Accela permitting portal.

Use the official digital gateway to submit plans, monitor review comments, pay required charges, and request inspections when the permit is issued. If the link is unavailable, use the agency website or phone number on the administrative profile to confirm the current lane.

Typical review lane

N/A for ordinary building plan review; Permit Sonoma does not publish one universal review duration. For qualifying accessory dwelling units, Sonoma County rules provide a 120-day approval-or-denial limit from a complete application unless the applicant voluntarily requests a longer timeframe.

Treat this as a planning signal, not a guaranteed approval date. Completeness, corrections, resubmittals, and agency workload control the actual clock.

01

Confirm jurisdiction

Verify the parcel is inside this agency’s service area and note whether a city, state, fire marshal, septic authority, or utility district also has approval authority.

02

Assemble a complete package

Prepare legible plans, site information, project valuation, ownership authorization, contractor information, and any energy, floodplain, zoning, or utility documentation the issuing office requires.

03

Track the review record

Keep the permit number, approved plan set, correction comments, fee receipts, and inspection results together. Those records establish the compliance trail for the next trade.

Project questions

Frequently asked questions for Sonoma County

Who handles permitting for this jurisdiction?

Sonoma County Permit Sonoma (Permit and Resource Management Department) - Building Division is the identified county-level authority for this profile. Confirm that the property is in its service area before filing.

How should I begin an application?

Begin with the online permit gateway listed in the application guide. If the portal does not recognize the address or project type, contact (707) 565-1900; automated inspection scheduling (707) 565-3551.

How long might review take?

N/A for ordinary building plan review; Permit Sonoma does not publish one universal review duration. For qualifying accessory dwelling units, Sonoma County rules provide a 120-day approval-or-denial limit from a complete application unless the applicant voluntarily requests a longer timeframe.

How are inspections scheduled?

After linking the permit to a Permit Sonoma online account, applicants can schedule inspections through the Permits Online portal. Permit Sonoma materials also identify the automated inspection line (707) 565-3551; have the permit number, job address, and inspection type/code available. Keep the job card and approved plans available, and do not conceal work before required inspection.

Which codes and exemptions should I review?

Sonoma County Ordinance 6539, adopted September 12, 2025, adopts with local amendments selected provisions of the 2025 California Building Standards Code, including the 2025 California Building Code, Residential Code, Electrical Code, Mechanical Code, Plumbing Code, Energy Code, Green Building Standards Code, Fire Code, Wildland-Urban Interface Code, and Existing Building Code, as applicable to the project and unincorporated county area. Common California/County exemptions include one-story detached accessory sheds, storage buildings, or playhouses up to 120 sq. ft.; qualifying minor finish work; and other Title 24 Section 105.2/106.2 exemptions. Permit Sonoma states that electrical, mechanical, and plumbing work serving a permit-exempt structure still requires permits, and exemption does not waive Planning, Emergency Services, minimum construction, or other applicable rules. A separate agricultural building exemption may apply on an appropriately zoned, actively agricultural parcel of at least 5 acres when the non-habitable agricultural structure is at least 60 ft. from property lines and other non-exempt structures, is no more than two stories, and meets the County's structural and utility conditions; an exemption application is required.

What makes an application complete

A portal submission is only as strong as its supporting record.

Before you click submit, make sure the drawings agree with the site plan, project description, valuation, ownership authorization, and contractor information. If the work changes structure, occupancy, drainage, fire protection, energy performance, or utility demand, describe that scope plainly. Ambiguous narratives create correction cycles and delay the field schedule.

Save the confirmation number, payment receipt, uploaded plan set, and every correction comment. Those records are the backbone of a defensible compliance file when multiple trades or agencies share responsibility.
