Digital permit application gateway

Apply for a permit in Wood County

Start with the issuing authority’s own submission lane. A complete application package, accurate valuation, and accessible inspection path are the fastest route through statutory plan review.

Recommended first click

Open the official online permit gateway.

Use the official digital gateway to submit plans, monitor review comments, pay required charges, and request inspections when the permit is issued. If the link is unavailable, use the agency website or phone number on the administrative profile to confirm the current lane.

Typical review lane

Complete residential applications are usually reviewed and approved within three working days. Commercial projects submitted to E-Plan Exam are reviewed within 10 working days after all required information is received.

Treat this as a planning signal, not a guaranteed approval date. Completeness, corrections, resubmittals, and agency workload control the actual clock.

01

Confirm jurisdiction

Verify the parcel is inside this agency’s service area and note whether a city, state, fire marshal, septic authority, or utility district also has approval authority.

02

Assemble a complete package

Prepare legible plans, site information, project valuation, ownership authorization, contractor information, and any energy, floodplain, zoning, or utility documentation the issuing office requires.

03

Track the review record

Keep the permit number, approved plan set, correction comments, fee receipts, and inspection results together. Those records establish the compliance trail for the next trade.

Application documents

Use the official form when a portal is not the only filing route.

Before submission, call 715-421-8228 if the project involves a change of occupancy, structural alteration, accessory structure, demolition, or work near a regulated environmental feature.

Project questions

Frequently asked questions for Wood County

Who handles permitting for this jurisdiction?

This record is marked Municipal Fallback. Confirm whether a city, state agency, or other local authority controls the parcel before filing.

How should I begin an application?

Begin with the online permit gateway listed in the application guide. If the portal does not recognize the address or project type, contact 715-421-8228.

How long might review take?

Complete residential applications are usually reviewed and approved within three working days. Commercial projects submitted to E-Plan Exam are reviewed within 10 working days after all required information is received.

How are inspections scheduled?

Call Community Development at 715-421-8228, commercial/residential inspector Ben Grimm at 715-421-8226, or residential inspector Josh Volz at 715-421-8227 to schedule when the project is ready. Required inspections depend on the project and commonly include footing/foundation, under-slab, framing and trade rough-ins, insulation, and final inspections. Chapter 14 requires the inspector to respond to an oral or written inspection request within 48 hours; work must not pass the inspection point unless no inspection occurs within that period, excluding weekends and holidays. Concealed work may have to be exposed at the owner's expense.

Which codes and exemptions should I review?

Wood County administers shoreland, floodplain and county general zoning but does not issue general building permits; town or municipal building approval is required. As the county-seat fallback, Wisconsin Rapids enforces Municipal Code Chapter 14 and Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code SPS 320-325 for one- and two-family construction, Wisconsin Commercial Building Code SPS 361-366 as a delegated municipality, Chapter 15 and SPS 380-387 plumbing requirements, Chapter 17 and SPS 316 electrical requirements, and local zoning under Chapter 11. Wisconsin Rapids lists permit-exempt work including painting, landscaping, flooring that does not involve the subfloor, drywall patching, gutters, grade-level patios, cabinet replacement without a layout change, replacement deck boards, temporary construction/snow/garden fencing, minor like-for-like light-fixture or receptacle replacement, low-voltage work, and limited like-for-like residential plumbing fixtures with a shutoff. Hot tubs or spas under 15 feet in diameter without plumbing are also listed as exempt. Chapter 14 allows the inspector to waive a building permit for estimated work under $500, but structural work, fences, accessory structures, signs and temporary structures require a permit regardless of value.

What makes an application complete

A portal submission is only as strong as its supporting record.

Before you click submit, make sure the drawings agree with the site plan, project description, valuation, ownership authorization, and contractor information. If the work changes structure, occupancy, drainage, fire protection, energy performance, or utility demand, describe that scope plainly. Ambiguous narratives create correction cycles and delay the field schedule.

Save the confirmation number, payment receipt, uploaded plan set, and every correction comment. Those records are the backbone of a defensible compliance file when multiple trades or agencies share responsibility.
