For KABA jurisdictions, the permit holder must request inspections and provide at least 24 hours' notice, the job location or permit number, access instructions, and an on-site contact. Building inspections are Monday-Friday; electrical Monday and Wednesday; mechanical Monday-Friday with Tuesday appointments after 2:00 PM; plumbing Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. KABA requires final trade inspections and other listed conditions before a certificate of occupancy. Other local agencies set their own schedules.
Local authorities enforce the Michigan codes applicable to their jurisdiction. Current statewide codes include 2021 Michigan Building Code and 2021 Michigan Rehabilitation Code (effective April 9, 2025), 2015 Michigan Residential Code (still current while the 2021 residential update is stayed), 2021 Michigan Mechanical and Plumbing Codes (effective March 12, 2024), 2021 Michigan Commercial Energy Code (effective April 22, 2025), and 2023 Michigan Electrical Code/NEC (effective March 12, 2024). KABA specifically announced the 2021 Building and Rehabilitation Codes and 2021 Commercial Energy Code effective dates. Michigan ordinary repairs may proceed without a permit when they do not cut or remove structural members or required egress and do not affect regulated plumbing, electrical, mechanical, or other public-health and safety systems. KABA materials identify limited plan-review exceptions for minor alterations/repairs, certain small residential mechanical work, and some small HVAC-only commercial work; the responsible local official determines whether an exemption applies. KABA also identifies permits for sheds over 200 square feet and pools over 24 inches of water, with zoning questions directed to the local jurisdiction.
What makes an application complete
Before you click submit, make sure the drawings agree with the site plan, project description, valuation, ownership authorization, and contractor information. If the work changes structure, occupancy, drainage, fire protection, energy performance, or utility demand, describe that scope plainly. Ambiguous narratives create correction cycles and delay the field schedule.
Save the confirmation number, payment receipt, uploaded plan set, and every correction comment. Those records are the backbone of a defensible compliance file when multiple trades or agencies share responsibility.
