Digital permit application gateway

Apply for a permit in Branch County

Start with the issuing authority’s own submission lane. A complete application package, accurate valuation, and accessible inspection path are the fastest route through statutory plan review.

Recommended first click

Open the official online permit gateway.

Use the official digital gateway to submit plans, monitor review comments, pay required charges, and request inspections when the permit is issued. If the link is unavailable, use the agency website or phone number on the administrative profile to confirm the current lane.

Typical review lane

The Branch County application states that an enforcing agency should grant or deny an application within 10 business days, or within 15 business days for an unusually complicated building or structure, assuming the application is complete. The county will not send applications for review until all required information is complete.

Treat this as a planning signal, not a guaranteed approval date. Completeness, corrections, resubmittals, and agency workload control the actual clock.

01

Confirm jurisdiction

Verify the parcel is inside this agency’s service area and note whether a city, state, fire marshal, septic authority, or utility district also has approval authority.

02

Assemble a complete package

Prepare legible plans, site information, project valuation, ownership authorization, contractor information, and any energy, floodplain, zoning, or utility documentation the issuing office requires.

03

Track the review record

Keep the permit number, approved plan set, correction comments, fee receipts, and inspection results together. Those records establish the compliance trail for the next trade.

Application documents

Use the official form when a portal is not the only filing route.

Before submission, call 517-279-4303 if the project involves a change of occupancy, structural alteration, accessory structure, demolition, or work near a regulated environmental feature.

Project questions

Frequently asked questions for Branch County

Who handles permitting for this jurisdiction?

Branch County Building Department is the identified county-level authority for this profile. Confirm that the property is in its service area before filing.

How should I begin an application?

Begin with the online permit gateway listed in the application guide. If the portal does not recognize the address or project type, contact 517-279-4303.

How long might review take?

The Branch County application states that an enforcing agency should grant or deny an application within 10 business days, or within 15 business days for an unusually complicated building or structure, assuming the application is complete. The county will not send applications for review until all required information is complete.

How are inspections scheduled?

Contact the department at 517-279-4303 or inspections@branchcounty.gov to request required inspections. The owner or contractor must keep work exposed until approved; failure to call before covering walls or ceilings can require removal of finish materials and cause extra costs. Final approval and a Certificate of Occupancy require all applicable trades to receive final approval.

Which codes and exemptions should I review?

Current Michigan codes identified by LARA for 2026: 2021 Michigan Building Code (effective April 9, 2025); 2015 Michigan Residential Code (current code, effective February 8, 2016, with later 2021 residential rules held by court order); 2021 Michigan Rehabilitation Code; 2021 Michigan Mechanical Code; 2021 Michigan Plumbing Code; 2023 National Electrical Code/Michigan Electrical Code (effective March 12, 2024); and 2021 Michigan Commercial Energy Code (effective April 22, 2025). Branch County’s website still displays some older code labels, including 2015 commercial building, 2015 energy and 2017 electrical references, so applicants should confirm the code edition applied to the permit with the department. Branch County’s FAQ identifies detached residential accessory buildings of 200 square feet or less and buildings used exclusively for agricultural purposes as examples of new construction that may be exempt from a building permit; zoning permits are still required for agricultural buildings and an agricultural affidavit may be required. Michigan exemptions also cover qualifying minor work such as painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets/countertops and ordinary repairs that do not affect structure, egress, regulated systems, public health or general safety. Verify the exact exemption with the department before beginning work.

What makes an application complete

A portal submission is only as strong as its supporting record.

Before you click submit, make sure the drawings agree with the site plan, project description, valuation, ownership authorization, and contractor information. If the work changes structure, occupancy, drainage, fire protection, energy performance, or utility demand, describe that scope plainly. Ambiguous narratives create correction cycles and delay the field schedule.

Save the confirmation number, payment receipt, uploaded plan set, and every correction comment. Those records are the backbone of a defensible compliance file when multiple trades or agencies share responsibility.
