Typical review lane

N/A. Warren County publishes no standard review timeline for ordinary building permits. Approved permits expire if work does not start within six months or if construction is not completed within 18 months.

Treat this as a planning signal, not a guaranteed approval date. Completeness, corrections, resubmittals, and agency workload control the actual clock.

01

Confirm jurisdiction

Verify the parcel is inside this agency’s service area and note whether a city, state, fire marshal, septic authority, or utility district also has approval authority.

02

Assemble a complete package

Prepare legible plans, site information, project valuation, ownership authorization, contractor information, and any energy, floodplain, zoning, or utility documentation the issuing office requires.

03

Track the review record

Keep the permit number, approved plan set, correction comments, fee receipts, and inspection results together. Those records establish the compliance trail for the next trade.

Project questions

Frequently asked questions for Warren County

Who handles permitting for this jurisdiction?

Warren County Planning and Zoning Department is the identified county-level authority for this profile. Confirm that the property is in its service area before filing.

How should I begin an application?

Begin with the online permit gateway listed in the application guide. If the portal does not recognize the address or project type, contact 515-690-9160.

How long might review take?

N/A. Warren County publishes no standard review timeline for ordinary building permits. Approved permits expire if work does not start within six months or if construction is not completed within 18 months.

How are inspections scheduled?

Warren County does not publish a separate inspection-booking calendar or inspection phone line. Submit the application through GeoPermits and contact Planning and Zoning at 515-690-9160 for permit and inspection requirements; applications may also require coordination with Environmental Health, the County Engineer, local fire district, State Fire Marshal, Iowa DNR, utilities, or other reviewing authorities. The 2026 ordinance requires owners/developers to facilitate required inspections, and permits must be obtained in writing before work begins.

Which codes and exemptions should I review?

Warren County's 2026 Chapter 43 establishes the county Building Permit process for unincorporated areas and requires compliance with the county zoning and subdivision ordinance, applicable state and utility approvals, and reviews by Environmental Health, the County Engineer, local fire authorities, the State Fire Marshal, Iowa DNR, and other authorities as needed. The 2026 all-ordinance compilation expressly requires International Building Code (2024), as amended, plus applicable state, regional, and federal building and fire-safety codes for event centers. No separate countywide technical-code adoption list for ordinary projects was published. Agricultural buildings exempt under Iowa Code section 335.2 are exempt from or subject to modified requirements. Reduced fees may apply to accessory structures or additions, including detached garages, pole buildings, shipping containers, signs, and personal renewable-energy systems, but not accessory dwelling units. Buildings under 200 square feet are exempt from permit fees but must still comply with setbacks and use requirements. The ordinance does not provide a blanket exemption from zoning or other applicable state requirements.

What makes an application complete

A portal submission is only as strong as its supporting record.

Before you click submit, make sure the drawings agree with the site plan, project description, valuation, ownership authorization, and contractor information. If the work changes structure, occupancy, drainage, fire protection, energy performance, or utility demand, describe that scope plainly. Ambiguous narratives create correction cycles and delay the field schedule.

Save the confirmation number, payment receipt, uploaded plan set, and every correction comment. Those records are the backbone of a defensible compliance file when multiple trades or agencies share responsibility.
