Regulatory framework
The code baseline for Montezuma County.
For unincorporated Montezuma County, the current County building page says there is no county building department and no building-code enforcement for residential construction. New construction and remodeling of commercial or industrial buildings and structures must comply with the Uniform Building Code, 1997 Edition or greater. The 2026 Montezuma County Land Use Code governs land-use and development review; Colorado State electrical and plumbing requirements apply separately. The County does not issue Certificates of Occupancy.
Inspection lane
The County does not perform routine residential building-code inspections. For some projects, Montezuma County may require or allow a qualified inspection agency; the County says the Cortez Building Department may provide those services for a fee on request. Contact Montezuma County Planning and Zoning at (970) 565-2801 or Cortez at (970) 565-3402. State electrical and plumbing inspections are separate; the County's current building page directs applicants to Colorado DPO at (303) 894-7800. SmartGov advises allowing 24 business hours for an application-status or next-step email response.
