Typical review lane

A complete building-contractor license application is issued within no more than seven business days under the County's licensing rules. N/A for the building-permit plan-review timeline; the County does not publish a fixed current review period.

Treat this as a planning signal, not a guaranteed approval date. Completeness, corrections, resubmittals, and agency workload control the actual clock.

01

Confirm jurisdiction

Verify the parcel is inside this agency’s service area and note whether a city, state, fire marshal, septic authority, or utility district also has approval authority.

02

Assemble a complete package

Prepare legible plans, site information, project valuation, ownership authorization, contractor information, and any energy, floodplain, zoning, or utility documentation the issuing office requires.

03

Track the review record

Keep the permit number, approved plan set, correction comments, fee receipts, and inspection results together. Those records establish the compliance trail for the next trade.

Project questions

Frequently asked questions for Gunnison County

Who handles permitting for this jurisdiction?

Gunnison County Community and Economic Development Department, Building Office is the identified county-level authority for this profile. Confirm that the property is in its service area before filing.

How should I begin an application?

Begin with the online permit gateway listed in the application guide. If the portal does not recognize the address or project type, contact (970) 641-0360; inspection line (970) 641-1011; permit@gunnisoncounty.org; Public Works (970) 641-0044.

How long might review take?

A complete building-contractor license application is issued within no more than seven business days under the County's licensing rules. N/A for the building-permit plan-review timeline; the County does not publish a fixed current review period.

How are inspections scheduled?

Call the inspection line at (970) 641-1011 and provide at least 48 hours' notice. The permit packet states that the permit and related inspections must be coordinated with Community Development; electrical inspections are by the Colorado Electrical Board and plumbing inspections by the State Plumbing Inspector. Driveway/access and reclamation permits from Public Works are required before a building permit can issue when applicable.

Which codes and exemptions should I review?

For unincorporated Gunnison County, the Board adopted the 2021 International Codes with amendments effective January 1, 2023 under Resolution 23-22. The County also identifies the 2021 International Wildland-Urban Interface Code, the Colorado Model Electric Ready and Solar Ready Code, and applicable Colorado state plumbing and electrical codes; plumbing and electrical permits/inspections are handled by State inspectors. Incorporated cities and towns use their own building authorities. One-story detached accessory structures without utilities under 200 square feet are exempt when accessory and incidental to a dwelling on the same parcel. Agricultural structures may request an exemption when they meet the County Land Use Resolution definitions of Agricultural Structure and Agricultural Operation. The County also exempts certain owner-performers, maintenance workers, and State-licensed electricians/plumbers from the separate building-contractor-license requirement, not from building-permit requirements generally.

What makes an application complete

A portal submission is only as strong as its supporting record.

Before you click submit, make sure the drawings agree with the site plan, project description, valuation, ownership authorization, and contractor information. If the work changes structure, occupancy, drainage, fire protection, energy performance, or utility demand, describe that scope plainly. Ambiguous narratives create correction cycles and delay the field schedule.

Save the confirmation number, payment receipt, uploaded plan set, and every correction comment. Those records are the backbone of a defensible compliance file when multiple trades or agencies share responsibility.
