Digital permit application gateway

Apply for a permit in Elbert County

Start with the issuing authority’s own submission lane. A complete application package, accurate valuation, and accessible inspection path are the fastest route through statutory plan review.

Recommended first click

Open the official online permit gateway.

Use the official digital gateway to submit plans, monitor review comments, pay required charges, and request inspections when the permit is issued. If the link is unavailable, use the agency website or phone number on the administrative profile to confirm the current lane.

Typical review lane

The current FAQ says turnaround varies by project type, projects are processed in the order received, and missing documents or additional-information requests can cause delays; applicants should email BuildingDepartment@ElbertCounty-co.gov for a current estimate. A County department summary describes a target of approximately two weeks for permit submittals and next-day inspections for buildings under construction, excluding Friday/weekend requests.

Treat this as a planning signal, not a guaranteed approval date. Completeness, corrections, resubmittals, and agency workload control the actual clock.

01

Confirm jurisdiction

Verify the parcel is inside this agency’s service area and note whether a city, state, fire marshal, septic authority, or utility district also has approval authority.

02

Assemble a complete package

Prepare legible plans, site information, project valuation, ownership authorization, contractor information, and any energy, floodplain, zoning, or utility documentation the issuing office requires.

03

Track the review record

Keep the permit number, approved plan set, correction comments, fee receipts, and inspection results together. Those records establish the compliance trail for the next trade.

Project questions

Frequently asked questions for Elbert County

Who handles permitting for this jurisdiction?

Elbert County Building Department is the identified county-level authority for this profile. Confirm that the property is in its service area before filing.

How should I begin an application?

Begin with the online permit gateway listed in the application guide. If the portal does not recognize the address or project type, contact (720) 595-3619; Chief Building Official: (303) 621-3156.

How long might review take?

The current FAQ says turnaround varies by project type, projects are processed in the order received, and missing documents or additional-information requests can cause delays; applicants should email BuildingDepartment@ElbertCounty-co.gov for a current estimate. A County department summary describes a target of approximately two weeks for permit submittals and next-day inspections for buildings under construction, excluding Friday/weekend requests.

How are inspections scheduled?

Schedule inspections through the CommunityCore permit system and ensure the site is accessible from 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. with approved plans, permit card, and inspection record visible onsite. Limited Friday inspections are by appointment through BuildingDepartment@ElbertCounty-co.gov and require a $95 fee. Reinspection fees are $50 for the first incident, $100 for the second, and $200 for the third plus a two-workday delay; further inspections pause until fees are paid.

Which codes and exemptions should I review?

For unincorporated Elbert County, the adopted package is the 2018 International Building, Residential, Energy Conservation, Existing Building, Mechanical, Fuel Gas, Plumbing, Property Maintenance, and Fire Codes with County amendments under Ordinance 22-01. The 2025 Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code was adopted May 27, 2026 and supplements the County's building and fire codes in applicable wildland-urban-interface areas. The County FAQ exempts one-story detached noncommercial accessory structures and tool/storage sheds or playhouses up to 200 square feet without utilities; fences up to 7 feet; retaining walls up to 4 feet unless supporting a surcharge; detached decks up to 200 square feet and no more than 30 inches above grade that are not attached to a dwelling or serving a required exit; grade-supported water tanks up to 5,000 gallons with a height-to-width/diameter ratio no greater than 2:1; painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work; and qualifying above-ground prefabricated R-3 swimming pools under 24 inches deep and 5,000 gallons. Other permits, such as septic or utility approvals, may still apply.

What makes an application complete

A portal submission is only as strong as its supporting record.

Before you click submit, make sure the drawings agree with the site plan, project description, valuation, ownership authorization, and contractor information. If the work changes structure, occupancy, drainage, fire protection, energy performance, or utility demand, describe that scope plainly. Ambiguous narratives create correction cycles and delay the field schedule.

Save the confirmation number, payment receipt, uploaded plan set, and every correction comment. Those records are the backbone of a defensible compliance file when multiple trades or agencies share responsibility.
