Typical review lane

Up to 6 weeks after a complete submittal. The County requires the building permit application, three complete sets of building plans, three site maps, plan-review/zoning fee payment, and other project-specific documents before review; incomplete submittals can be returned and incur additional fees upon resubmission and rereview.

Treat this as a planning signal, not a guaranteed approval date. Completeness, corrections, resubmittals, and agency workload control the actual clock.

01

Confirm jurisdiction

Verify the parcel is inside this agency’s service area and note whether a city, state, fire marshal, septic authority, or utility district also has approval authority.

02

Assemble a complete package

Prepare legible plans, site information, project valuation, ownership authorization, contractor information, and any energy, floodplain, zoning, or utility documentation the issuing office requires.

03

Track the review record

Keep the permit number, approved plan set, correction comments, fee receipts, and inspection results together. Those records establish the compliance trail for the next trade.

Which codes and exemptions should I review?

2025 California Building Standards Code, Title 24, effective January 1, 2026, automatically adopted by reference under Trinity County Code Section 15.04.010.A, including applicable Building, Residential, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Energy, Green Building, Fire, Existing Building, and Wildland-Urban Interface provisions. County Title 15 and local Trinity County Fire Safe Standards (Ordinance 1162/TCC 8.30) also apply where relevant. Trinity County Ordinance 1373 (June 3, 2025) exempts one-story detached accessory structures up to 120 sq. ft. used only for general storage; fences up to 7 ft. subject to zoning and transportation rules; retaining walls up to 4 ft. measured from the footing bottom unless supporting a surcharge; grade-supported water tanks up to 5,000 gallons with a height-to-width/diameter ratio no greater than 20:1; qualifying painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops, and similar finish work; prefabricated pools under 24 inches deep; playground equipment; qualifying wall-supported awnings projecting no more than 54 inches; and decks up to 200 sq. ft. and 30 inches above grade. Agricultural buildings may be exempt only when used for qualifying agricultural storage/production purposes, in allowed zoning districts, after a letter of intent and zoning clearance; plumbing and electrical work are not exempt and still requires permits.

What makes an application complete

A portal submission is only as strong as its supporting record.

Before you click submit, make sure the drawings agree with the site plan, project description, valuation, ownership authorization, and contractor information. If the work changes structure, occupancy, drainage, fire protection, energy performance, or utility demand, describe that scope plainly. Ambiguous narratives create correction cycles and delay the field schedule.

Save the confirmation number, payment receipt, uploaded plan set, and every correction comment. Those records are the backbone of a defensible compliance file when multiple trades or agencies share responsibility.
