Shasta County's residential exemption handout lists one-story detached accessory structures up to 120 sq. ft. and 12 ft. to the ridge; fences up to 7 ft.; retaining walls up to 4 ft. measured from the bottom of the footing unless supporting a surcharge; grade-supported water tanks up to 5,000 gallons with a height-to-width/diameter ratio no greater than 2:1; sidewalks and driveways; painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops, and similar finish work; prefabricated pools less than 24 inches deep; swings/playground equipment; wall-supported window awnings projecting no more than 54 inches; and unattached decks up to 200 sq. ft. and 30 inches above grade that do not serve a required exit. Exemption does not authorize code- or ordinance-violating work and separate electrical, plumbing, zoning, fire, grading, or right-of-way approvals may still apply.

What makes an application complete

A portal submission is only as strong as its supporting record.

Before you click submit, make sure the drawings agree with the site plan, project description, valuation, ownership authorization, and contractor information. If the work changes structure, occupancy, drainage, fire protection, energy performance, or utility demand, describe that scope plainly. Ambiguous narratives create correction cycles and delay the field schedule.

Save the confirmation number, payment receipt, uploaded plan set, and every correction comment. Those records are the backbone of a defensible compliance file when multiple trades or agencies share responsibility.
