Craig applications and site plans are submitted to the Craig City Planner for review and approval; contact Planning and Zoning at 907-826-3275 for inspection arrangements. Craig building permits are valid for one year and must be renewed for $30 per additional year. For state-jurisdiction projects, submit plans through the Alaska State Fire Marshal Community Portal; the State issues approval after review and occupancy is allowed only after construction complies with the approved plans.
Within Craig, the City enforces the Craig Municipal Code and local land-development standards; the reviewed Craig permit page does not identify a separate adopted IBC/IRC edition. In the unorganized census area and other non-deferred locations, Alaska State Fire Marshal review applies to covered commercial construction under the Alaska 2021 code cycle, including the 2021 International Building Code, International Existing Building Code, International Mechanical Code, International Fire Code and International Fuel Gas Code, with Alaska amendments; electrical and plumbing requirements follow the current Alaska-adopted codes. Craig exempts, when the applicant submits a plot plan to confirm setbacks, one-story accessory buildings such as sheds, smokehouses and playhouses with roof area under 120 square feet; fences no higher than 10 feet; retaining walls no higher than 4 feet; and platforms, walls and driveways no more than 30 inches above grade. State Fire Marshal plan review exempts residential housing of three-plex or smaller; the state exemption does not eliminate any applicable local city permit. Other communities in the census area should confirm local exemptions with their city or tribal authority.
What makes an application complete
